This generation of young people sees and experiences the world differently than older generations. That doesn't mean they don't learn some of the same things.

It does mean they learn those things in a different way. Take math, for instance. Some people say that "kids today can't do math" or rail against "new math."

To be clear, kids can do math, and "new math" gets the same old answers, but in different ways. Times change, and it is the responsibility of public education to adapt, to respond to the needs of its students, and to find new ways to help them succeed in the classroom.

So, what does that look like? Well, let us show you. This is the first in a series of videos about math education in Washington. Each of these videos highlights schools and strategies educators are using to help students not only learn math, but also understand how to apply it both in and out of the classroom.
